DEFINITION OF SUMMARY WRITING
IMPORTANCE OF SUMMARY
The following are the important of summary written
TYPES OF SUMMARY
Basically there are two (2) types of summary.
(1) STRUCTURED OR TRADITIONAL SUMMARY
(2) MODERN SUMMARY
(1) STRUCTURED OR TRADITIONAL SUMMARY: This requires the reader to read the given passage and reduce its length to a specified numbers of words. This requires a total understanding of the passage. The reader must have in- depth knowledge of the whole passage before he/she can reduce it to specified numbers of words and still retain the message trying to pass by the writer.
(2) THE MODERN SUMMARY: In this type of summary, readers will only be expected to read the passage, understand it and give the summary of certain ideas in sentence(s). In this type of summary the reader will not be restrained to a specific numbers of words. Nevertheless the reader must be careful not to go out of point.
NOTE – MAKING: Note- making is the writing down of notes from a passage or text read. The notes represent the entire passage or text read. This method is also known as jotting down the most important points.
TECHNIQUES OF NOTE MAKING
a. Do a survey reading of the passage to give you a general knowledge of subject matter.
b. Read the passage again for better understanding, but take note of strange vocabulary and relate their meaning to the context. It is expected at this time that the knowledge of the reader about the passage must have been increase and he/she will be able to give a comprehensive account of the passage.
c. Suggest a title for the passage. He /she must ensure that the title bring out the main idea of the writer.
d. Read again and jot all salient point.
e. Relate the point together to give you the message in the passage.
NOTE - TAKING: This is the writing down of notes from a lecture or talk heard. This note represents the lecture or the talk heard and it contains all the point which the writer deems important. Unlike Note-Making, that the reader brings out point from already made material, in Note -Taking the listener must pay close attention to the lecture or talk in order to bring out important points. Also he/ she must have a very high memory in other to remember what he /she heard.

Summary writing can
be defined as the act of reducing the length of a given passage or speech into
a skeletal form by bringing out the major ideas in a clear, precise and concise
form. This is done through well-coordinated sentences which could be in a
representative of the original or in its own peculiar order, ensuring the main
meaning of the original materials is preserved.

* We are faced with a vast amount of
information on daily basis and some essential part of the information are
